Our Mission

Bringing Christ's compassion to the materially poor

LAMP (Lay Apostolic Ministries with the Poor) is a Catholic missionary community dedicated to sharing the love of Jesus with those experiencing poverty in New York City.

Founded in 1981 by Tom and Lyn Scheuring, LAMP invites practicing Catholic adults (ages 21-39) to commit to 9 months or longer of missionary service, living in intentional community with daily Mass and prayer.

Our missionaries serve through home visiting, youth education, Scripture sharing, sacramental preparation, and providing spiritual presence in shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes across NYC.

We believe that the deepest need of the poor is not material—it is spiritual. Through LAMP, missionaries grow in faith while bringing hope and God's love to those who need it most.
